Hobart events 1 - 3 November 2018

The Tasmanian Chapter of the Society invites members to a number of events to be held in first week of November in Hobart.

PROGRAM OF EVENTS, HOBART

Day 1 Thursday 1 November

  • 11.15 am A tour of the colonial furniture in the collection of Government House, Hobart, led by John Hawkins. The tour will culminate in the return of one of the 1843 dining chairs from the earlier Government House by Joseph Woolley of Hobart Town. The chair is being donated by one of our Australiana members.

Government House was designed as the perfect Gothic Revival country house by colonial architect William Porden Kay and built under the direction of Lt Governor William Denison. It is described by Anthony Trollope as, “the best belonging to any English Colony”. Completed in 1858 the house retains much of its richly decorated interior and colonial furniture (much of which was transferred from Hobart’s First Government House) which John Hawkins has documented for the Australiana journal.

  • 1.00 pm A tour of the Hobart Synagogue and its significant cedar fittings and furniture led by Scott Carlin. Designed in the Egyptian Revival style by James Thomson in 1843 it is the finest and most intact of the three synagogues built in this style in Australia. Sydney 1841 has long been demolished and Launceston 1844 remains. The interior is remarkably intact and houses a converted Argand lamp c. 1850 and rarities such as a chimney board.
  • 3.30 pm A private tour of the Thomas Bock exhibition at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery led by Jane Stewart, TMAG’s Principal Curator of Art.

Cost for the three events: $60 per person. Limited to a maximum of 40 participants.

  • 6.00 pm The opening of the Narryna Antique Fair. Fair admission is $10 per person, payable at the door.

Day 2 Friday 2 November

  • Subject to sufficient interest, a bus tour of the Derwent Valley, including two historic houses. Please register your interest as soon as possible.
